Pine Tar – a Natural Pine Resin Known for Alleviating Skin Ailments
With its strong, smoky scent – similar to that of a campfire burning in a pine forest – people tend to either love or hate the smell of pine tar, so be forewarned! But for those who are attracted to this description and are up for the adventure, you may soon be wondering where this magical, soothing ingredient has been all your life.
Pine tar is a natural resin by-product derived from pine wood and bark carbonization – and is distinctly different from coal tar (obtained from coal). Very little research is available on pine tar's healing, soothing, and antiseptic properties on skin, but the few studies that do exist appear to validate pine tar's historic use as a powerful medicinal ingredient while also alleviating previous concerns about potential carcinogenic components – thanks to the higher level of purity produced today (see References).
Pine tar is believed to help skin return to normal keratinization processes, and studies showing pine tar's anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal activities have cited this ingredient's suitability for topical treatment of various skin conditions, including (see References):
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis
- Other itchy, flaky and dry skin conditions such as shingles and atopic dermatitis
- Wound healing, in general
Anecdotally, people who suffer from these types of "troubled" skin conditions and use pine tar products (soap, salves, shampoos, etc.) also tend to swear by the soothing and healing effects of pine tar, often reporting that nothing else provides the same relief they are looking for.
In our Little Leaf Pharms products, we only use Auson Kiln-Burned Pine Tar, which – in our opinion – is the highest quality and purity of pine resin available that is also derived more "naturally" from burning tree stumps in kilns.
Natural & Organic for Optimal Health
Additional ingredients in this shampoo bar – including organic kokum butter, organic coconut oil, and organic castor oil – are all wonderfully nourishing and healthy oils for both hair (or fur) and scalp (see References).
Like humans – dogs are also susceptible to the toxic load of synthetic chemicals (including parabens, sulfates, silicones, and fragrances) typically found in commercial shampoos. Give your pup the best coat, skin, and health support by switching over to a more natural and organic option!
HEADS-UP: If the smoky campfire smell of pine tar is a pleasant one to you, you may find yourself tempted to sneak a hair wash or two for your own hair with this shampoo bar! We wouldn't blame you, but we will give you a heads-up that a new pine tar shampoo bar for humans (with extra goodies for humans only) is in the works and will be available on our site later this year.
Travel-Friendly, & Economical
Our dog shampoo bars are easy and convenient to pack up and travel with since they come in bar form – no more goopy messes!
You may also find our dog shampoo bars to be more economical and longer-lasting compared to commercial dog shampoos that are predominantly liquid-based. A little goes a long way!
How To Use a Dog Shampoo Bar
If you've never used a dog shampoo bar before, you might be wondering how to use it. It's very simple!
- Rinse your dog with water so the coat and skin is wet.
- Lather the dog shampoo bar by gently rubbing it against the dog coat (sometimes a circular motion works best).
- Once you've gotten a sufficient lather, massage the lather throughout the rest of the coat.
- Try to avoid getting shampoo suds in Fido's eyes to avoid soap sting (true "soap" will always have a relatively high pH). If you do get some in the eyes, just thoroughly rinse with water.
- Repeat as needed to lather up the whole coat and body.
- Rinse with water.
Depending on the thickness of your dog's coat, you may benefit from using our scalp massager (available HERE) as you wash your pup to help thoroughly spread the shampoo suds while also supporting healthy circulation.
